Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013 Verified Purchase The title of the book is a little deceiving. One may think that it's about eating 1200-1500 calories on $25 per day or less. However, this book is more about how the author released herself from the burden of being 150 lbs overweight and how you can do it too. She doesn't recommend a grapefruit before each meal or offer how you can lose weight eating a nothing but a bag of M&M's per day, rather she confides her struggle emotionally to break free from overeating. The book is very inspiring and relatable. Linda shows you that our weight loss struggles are essentially the same and the steps she took to overcome them. Rather than offering a specific meal plan she gives a life plan. Linda provides the tools necessary to successfully lose weight that don't come from the kitchen, such as how to create a support system and how to get your spouse on board with your new lifestyle.

Both groups eat healthful foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and eschew excessive dietary fat; practice portion control; and exercise vigorously and regularly. The only advantage the always-slim have over the successful dieters is that those habits seem to come a bit more naturally to them. "When we've compared people maintaining a weight loss with controls who've always had a normal weight, we've found that both groups are working hard at it; the maintainers are just working a little harder, " says Suzanne Phelan, Ph. D., an assistant professor of kinesiology at California Polytechnic State University and co-investigator of the National Weight Control Registry, which tracks people who have successfully maintained a weight loss over time. For our respondents, that meant exercising a little more and eating with a bit more restraint than an always-thin person—plus using more monitoring strategies such as weighing themselves or keeping a food diary. A total of 21, 632 readers completed the 2007 survey.

The need of the hour is to experiment with healthier alternatives, without going adrift of the diet plan. So, if you are tired of munching cabbage leaves, go for broccoli or maybe carrot. Ask your grocer to recommend a budget-friendly, healthy alternative to some of your vegetable, grain, and protein diet staples. Member Friendly! How about becoming a member of the store from where you purchase your daily stuff? Not only will you be offered occasional discounts, but you would also enjoy better services. Plus, being a member you would be given preference amongst the rest, when it comes to enjoying special offers. So, the next time you head to the store, make sure you have a word with the customer service personnel and get yourself a membership card. Wise Choice It is very important to make a wise choice when out for shopping, even if it means grocery shopping. This would not only help you make the right choice, but also help you take an informed decision. Moreover, always make it a point to shop with a list, so that you buy what you need and not what you want.

"Won't this savings approach cause just as much stress as budgeting? " I asked. "No, I know my spending pattern–the areas where I must set aside funds monthly, and I want to build savings, " Richard replied. The save-first approach excites Richard. He knows budgeting, like dieting, doesn't work because it needs to be part of his lifestyle, and he doesn't plan to incorporate that behavior in his routines. But, he is sure he can embrace the savings approach as part of his lifestyle because he believes savings are crucial to relieve financial stress. That's why he plans to set up a monthly transfer of $1000 to a tax-free savings account. The balance left after this transfer must suffice for his expenses. "Comfort to handle emergencies when they arise is the main help of the save-first approach, " Richard said. "Why not add savings in a budget and work with the traditional budgeting approach? " I asked. Richard replied, "I don't want to assign and check funds to individual categories. I want two headings only: savings and spending. "

What didn't matter One weight-loss strategy is conspicuously absent from the list: going low-carb. Of course we asked about it, and it turned out that limiting carbohydrates was linked to higher BMIs in our survey. That doesn't necessarily mean low-carb plans such as the Atkins or South Beach diets don't work. "If you go to the hospital and everyone there is sick, that doesn't mean the hospital made them sick, " says Eric C. Westman, M. D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at Duke University Medical School. "Just as people go to hospitals because they're ill, people may go to carb restriction because they have a higher BMI, not the other way around. " At the same time, the findings do suggest that cutting carbs alone, without other healthful behaviors such as exercise and portion control, might not lead to great results. Eating many small meals, or never eating between meals, didn't seem to make much difference one way or another. Including lean protein with most meals also didn't by itself predict a healthier weight.
