My schnauzer mix is on a low dose thyroid medication, thyro-tabs, he developed hypothyroidism after having a partial thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer. When he was hyperthyroid prior to his cancer diagnosis he dropped to about 20 pounds, his average weight is about 25 pounds, post surgery (its been a year) he now weighs 33 pounds. We very recently had another blood panel to check his thyroid levels to make sure his medication dose is still appropriate and his blood work looked good according to our vet. He has never actually had any symptoms of hypothyroidism other than maybe weight gain his coat and energy are excellent ect. And his thyroid meds seem to be working as his thyroid levels are normal. I asked my vet tech about his weight when they called with his blood work results and they really didn't offer much help honestly I do wonder if I am just feeding him too much? He eats 1 cup of science diet small paws per day and about half a can of royal canin mature adult. I wonder if he should be on a special diet with his medical history?

At least once a fortnight, either I or one of the team are asked if we sell the Pedigree Dentastix range. It's not surprising really. They are the biggest selling 'dental chew' product on the market. With a patented design and marketing and branding that screams "your dog's teeth won't be healthy without me", you'll find them in 99% of supermarkets and pet stores. While there seems to be a 'myth' that businesses will sell anything that makes money, particularly given the current high street challenges, we consciously made a decision not to stock the Dentastix range (along with a few other products/brands). However, the great news is that while we don't stock, there are several healthy dog treat alternatives to Pedigree's Dentastix range. We're sharing our best 7 dog dental chews in this blog below. At night we set an alarm to go off every 1. 5 hours so we can wake her up and put her on her potty pad. If she does not go after 10 minutes we put her back in her crate set the alarm for 20-30 minutes and then wake her up again. Once she goes we then reset the alarm for 1. 5 hours and repeat until morning. The issue is she does not seem to mind sleeping in her own mess. We have a wire crate with a "divider wall" so we can adjust the size. It's currently just big enough for her to fit in, turn around and lay down (per the vet's instructions there is also enough room for a water bowl and a toy). We know she can hold her pee and poop for at least 2 hours due to her trip to the vet yesterday, she went just before we left for the vet and held it until we got back (she has a potty pad in the car but did not use it). How can we train her not to use her crate (I thought this would be her natural instinct but apparently not). We can't be up 24/7 to ensure she does not pee there but at the same time since she does not seem to have an aversion to it she does not seem to even try to hold it.
